Homework Haven
Homework Haven is a program targeted toward school age students (K-12), by providing them with free tutoring assistance in all subject areas. Students can drop by the Centre from Mon-Fri, 2:30 – 5:00 p.m., and receive help from tutors and staff in daily homework, special projects, science fairs, assignments, and exam preparation. Students can use on-site computers for printing and research. This program also offers incentives for attendance including free clothing, gift cards, healthy snacks from the Kids Eat Smart Club, and enrollment into the Star Program, which includes prize draws for gaming systems, laptop computers, iPods, and other cool stuff!!

After School Activity Program
School age students are welcome to drop by the Centre each afternoon, Mon-Fri, from 2:30 – 5:00 p.m., to take part in the After School program. Activities involve arts n’ crafts, outdoor recreation, indoor gaming, computer usage, Little Chefs, and much more!

Little Chefs
Little Chefs gives kids ages 5-12 a chance to be creative with their favorite snacks and gain independence through being their own chef. Feel free to come and join the cooking creativity here at the Smallwood Crescent Community Centre!

Back To School Day
At the annual Back to School Day, the Smallwood Crescent Community Centre passes out book bags to all children living in our neighbourhoods to help them get on the right track with the new school year! All bags are packed with grade appropriate school supplies. Before passing out the book bags, families are treated to an end of summer fun day with a BBQ, outdoor games, and prizes.

Summer Recreation Program
During the summer months, the Centre is open for kids and families from 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. daily, Mon – Fri. Our recreation program includes indoor/outdoor fun, sports days, field trips, swimming, arts n’ crafts, movie days, sleepovers, hikes, and picnics!

Youth Outreach Program
In partnership with the Department of Advanced Education & Skills, the Community Centre is involved in promoting the programs and services of the Department to youth all over the Burin Peninsula. This is done through the Youth Outreach Coordinator who partners with local agencies such as Community Youth Networks, government departments, NL English School District, and local colleges, to present to youth at these locations on the various opportunities available to them for future employment and education. The Youth Outreach Coordinator is also involved in supporting employment services at the Community Centre through drop in resume assistance, job search, as well as through supporting Skills Link placements and the Green Team program.

Green Team
Since 2012, the Smallwood Crescent Community Centre has been partnering with Conservation Corp NL & the Department of Advanced Education & Skills to offer the Green Team program in the Smallwood Crescent area. This program provides 4 youth with summer employment as they work in environmental projects around the Smallwood Crescent area, as well as the greater Marystown and Burin area. Some duties involve regular garbage clean ups, environmental awareness events, outdoor beautification, and gardening.

Linkages
Linkages is one of the main employment programs that runs annually at the Centre. In the Linkages program, which is funded by the Department of Advanced Education & Skills, youth are placed with various employers in the area for a 26 week job placement. During the course of the program, staff at the Community Centre work with partnering organizations to provide career resources to the youth in hopes of them returning to school or finding full time employment. Bi-weekly sessions are held with youth throughout the program on career related topics, self-esteem building, mental health, and job search.

Employment Transitions
Employment Transitions is a program that allows the Centre to assist participants in increasing their self-esteem, self-confidence, and make career and life decisions. The overall goal will be to help the individuals develop a path to return to work or further their education. Groups of 6-12 participants are enrolled into a 9 week program and a curriculum is followed for instruction. In addition to the educational and employment instruction, the groups partake in extracurricular activities outside the classroom.

Coffee Time
Smallwood Crescent Community Centre is pleased to offer Coffee Time, every Tuesday from 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM. This is a family based event, so feel free to bring your children.

Ladies Night Out
Card games, snacks, and laughs are all part of the menu during the Centre’s Ladies Night. It is held each Monday at 7:00 p.m., September – June.

Darts
Darts is sponsored by the Community Togetherness Association, every Wednesday, September – June, at 7:00 p.m.

Grocery Bingo
For Adults 19 yrs. and older, the Community Center operates Grocery Bingo, every second Tuesday beginning at 7:00pm. There are 14 games to be played. Each book of 14 cards costs $5.00. You have the option of purchasing a pick-a-bingo for $1.00, 50/50 draw for $1.00, loonie pot for $1.00, or the wheel spin 10 tickets for $1.00. Come and test your luck, and don’t forget your bingo blotters!

Past Time Painting
Amaze yourself and discover the artist inside you. Join your friends and take a painting class hosted by Calvin Jackman at the Community Center. This is your chance to show off your talents. Paintings are great for gifts or hang them yourself. All adults are welcome.

Fitness Program
The staff at the Smallwood Crescent Community Center have teamed together to create a healthier YOU! Join our staff in a fitness hour, feel better about yourself, gain energy and live healthier by using the treadmill, shaker, elliptical machine, exercise balls, home gym, ab lounger, exercise videos, and more. Bring your sneakers and your energy! New members always welcome!!

Community Kitchen
The Community Kitchen is designed to promote friendship and healthy living, by creating a social atmosphere where small groups prepare food, share in the learning, and have fun doing it. During this time, they are guided by kitchen staff, to plan menus and cook for themselves and their families. Throughout the length of the program, special events are planned to include family and friends of the participants.
FRIENDSHIP, FOOD, and FUN are the order of each and every day at the Community Kitchen!

Family Fun Day
We kick off the summer with a family fun day! All families in the community are invited to participate in the many activities we have to offer. The local fire department and RCMP make a visit and let the kids tour their fire trucks and police cars. We have, a small pool for the younger kids, races, treats, face painting and much more! Get ready for fun in the sun and Kick off your summer with the Smallwood Crescent Community Centre. Come on out and celebrate summer!!

Family Camp
Each year, the Community Centre will travel with neighbourhood families to the Frenchman’s Cove Provincial Park for the annual Family Camp. The Family Camp consists of 3 nights, 4 days, of outdoor tenting, cooking, sports, swimming, camp fires and a whole lot of fun!

Special Events
Annual special occasions are distinguished at the Centre through parties, activities, and luncheons. The Community Centre will involve neighbourhood residents in celebrating Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Easter.
